OVER THE WORLD
1ST MARCH 2016 - 13TH MARCH 2016
Together with the TROMP manager Arthur van der Drift I travelled to Japan, China and Russia for the TROMP Repertoire Days 2016. What an inspiring trip we've had! It is so interesting to see all these cultures in such a short amount of time, new cities, new people, new food, it makes me feel happy and it gives me a lot of ideas for the future again.
We started in Kawasaki, Japan, (Tokio), where ms. Momoko Kamiya invited us to give a lot of masterclasses and a closing recital together with maestro Emmanuel Séjourné. Impressive to see how this huge department with 80 percussion students is organized. It was very nice to work with all these motivated percussionists on the repertoire for the competition. I enjoyed eating Sushi in a very small restaurant and seeing a traditional Koto orchestra playing. Well I can write a whole story only about Japan, but after 5 days we already left to Shanghai, China.
Again a huge city. I was very impressed by the amount of people and the amount of buildings in this city. Professor Yang took us to some nice Chinese restaurants where we had very delicious dinners. In Shanghai I worked together with Yi-Ping Yang which was great fun! We both had a focus on the theatrical aspect of percussion. How to use your body and how that influences your playing. With only two days of masterclasses we could still talk about a lot of different subjects.
The last location was in Moscow, Tchaikovsky Conservatory. An honor to teach in this place where Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev and many other hero's worked. I always imagined being on the Red Square when I listened to Shostakovich' 11th Symphony and now I finally experienced the energy of this location. Russia is big! Together with Niels Meliefste from Percussion group the Hague and Momoko Kamiya we gave three days masterclasses and two lectures about practicing and about being a professional percussion player.
